Large Dish with a Tiger and Bamboo 青磁染付竹に虎図大皿せいじそめつけたけにとらずおおざら

Description

This dish comes from the Imari kilns on the island of Kyushu, a leading porcelain manufacturing center during the Edo period (1603–1868). The painted decoration shows a tiger walking over a stream with bamboo in the foreground. Tigers were believed to live in bamboo groves and repel evil spirits, making them a popular subject in art.
