Pair of Spiral-Wrapped Sword Mountings (Hirumaki no Daishō) 朱漆金蛭巻大小しゅうるしきんひるまきのだいしょう
Description
During the tumultuous civil wars of the late 1500s, the samurai began to wear [daishō] — pairs of long and short swords in matching scabbards. This ornate [daishō] combines red lacquer with gold. It was probably owned by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537–1598), a samurai warlord famed as one of the Three Unifiers of Japan.
