Description
A group of swordsmiths called the Aoe school flourished in western Japan from the 1100s to the 1300s. The maker of this blade, Yasutsugu, was a prominent early member of the school. The blade is characterized by a complex tempering pattern along the cutting edge, a result of the steel-hardening process.
