Bust of Hōjō Torakichi 北条虎吉胸像ほうじょうとらきちきょうぞう

Description

This sculpture was commissioned by the subject himself, who was a friend of the sculptor Ogiwara’s older brother. Deeply moved by [Le Penseur] ([The Thinker]) by Auguste Rodin, Ogiwara studied sculpture in Paris. In the two short years after returning to Japan in 1908 and before passing away, he vigorously created works that greatly influenced young sculptors in Japan. This work was awarded Third Place at the Bunten Exhibition in 1909.
