Medallion: Behold the Man (Ecce Homo) 銅牌 キリスト像(エッケ・ホモ)どうはい きりすとぞう(えっけ・ほも)

Description

Originally, this small medallion would have been used as an object of worship. Following the ban on Christianity in Edo-period Japan (1603–1868), it was confiscated from a believer. The authorities then forced other suspected believers to step on this image; if they refused, they would have been persecuted as Christians.
