The Bodhisattva Kannon 観音菩薩坐像かんのんぼさつざぞう

Description

Officials confiscated many figures of the bodhisattva Kannon from suspected Christians in Urakami, Nagasaki in southern Japan. As these were assessed to be figures of Kannon by Buddhist monk inspectors, those arrested were not persecuted as Christians. Bronze figures like this were common, second only to white porcelain figures.
