The Bodhisattva Kannon 観音菩薩坐像かんのんぼさつざぞう

Description

It is difficult to determine if the black on this sculpture is dirt or paint just by looking at it. Using X-ray fluorescence, however, researchers have confirmed that the bottom of the pedestal was painted with a red pigment that was also used on the other figures on display here. This is likely a mass-produced sculpture made for export.
