Poem from a Pilgrimage to the Kumano Shrine 熊野懐紙くまのかいし

Description

Poetry written in elegant calligraphy was displayed at tea gatherings for the guests to admire and discuss. The poems here were originally composed by a nobleman during a sacred pilgrimage. The first poem evokes the sound of horses’ hooves echoing on a freezing winter morning. The second conjures the image of smoke rising from a charcoal kiln in the mountains.
