政演は北尾重政に学び黄表紙の挿絵を手がけ、やがて黄表紙や滑稽本を自作するようになる。天明二年（1782）以降、山東京伝と名乗り文名を高めた。その活躍は多彩で、錦絵のほか風俗絵巻なども描くなど、当代一の文化人として活躍する傍ら、煙草店も経営した。
