「歌撰戀之部」は、背景を紅雲母摺（べにきらずり）とした美人大首絵５枚揃いシリーズで、歌麿は女性の年齢や表情、仕草を描き分け恋する女性の心の襞までを描き出そうとしている。本図は歯に鉄漿（おはぐろ）を付けた年増の婦人。寛政（1789～1801）中頃制作の、歌麿の代表作。
