Description

These four segments come from a commentary on the Golden Light Sutra of the Most Victorious Kings (J., Kongômyô saishôôkyô) by Myôichi (728-98), a monk of Tôdai-ji Temple in Nara. Transmitted through the Iimura practice hall, in the Yokawa section on Mount Hiei, this copy, said to have been brushed in the hand of Emperor Saga (786-842; r. 809-823), was given the appellation, “Iimuro Edition” (J., Iimuro gire). These segments, totaling 108 1/2 lines, serve as an important source in understanding annotations in Buddhist texts from the early Heian period (794-1185).
