江戸時代前期の御用絵師で、多くの寺社、大名屋敷の障壁画などを描き、武家に適合した画体を確立した。一方で、身近な草花や、各家から到来した珍しい鳥や獣など、興味を惹いたものを即座に写生することを好み、晩年まで写生を続けていたことが知られている。(2005/06/21)
