Description
Chinese legends were a favorite theme for paintings displayed at Zen temples. The paintings here were originally mounted on sliding doors at Daisen'in, a sub-temple of the great Zen monastery Daitokuji in Kyoto. On the left is the goddess known as the Queen Mother of the West. On the right is the scholar Dongfang Shuo, who stole and ate the Queen Mother’s peaches of immortality.
