The Grand Master Hall at Tōji Temple 東寺大師堂とうじだいしどう

Description

This photo shows Tōji Temple, located southwest of Kyoto Station, in the early Meiji era (1868–1912). Photographer Yokoyama Matsusaburō (1838–1884) captured this during the 1872 Jinshin Survey, an extensive study to document Japan’s cultural heritage. The figures included in the frame serve as a vital reference to illustrate the building’s immense scale.
