鳥居清長は、役者絵のほかに開放的な空間に長身の美人を描いた健康的な美人画を得意とし、天明(1781～89)期の浮世絵界をリードした。「風俗東之錦」は、清長の代表作とされる全20図の揃物で、本図は２枚続きで制作された秋の庭を描いた図の左側である。
