Description

Tanabata, the Star Festival held on the 7th day of the 7th month, celebrates the stars Vega and Altair (the Weaving Maid and the Cowherd) being visible together in the night sky. Today, people write down their wishes and hang them from bamboo. In the Edo period (1615–1868) they hung poem slips, and women prayed for improved sewing skills.
