Portrait of Fujiwara Kamatari 藤原鎌足像ふじわらのかまたりぞう

Description

This is a painting of Fujiwara no Kamatari (614–669), the tutelary deity of Tanzan Shrine in Nara Prefecture. He is depicted in the center, with his two sons, Jōe (614–669) in monastic garb and Fuhito (659–720) seated at his feet. At the top of the painting is the story of the building of Tanzan Shrine’s thirteen-story pagoda, and five circles containing the Buddhist forms of the Fujiwara tutelary deities of Kasuga Shrine.
