序文によれば、『枕草子』より情趣のある場面の詞書を選び、絵を付して「朝日山」と題した巻子があった。その後、古物語集の中からこれを見つけた人物が、西川祐信に頼んで絵を描いてもらい、絵本として出版したものである。
