Description

Kanō Masanobu, founder of the Kanō school, created this pair of winter landscapes. One scene depicts a scholar while the other portrays a gentleman, both representing the ideal Chinese of Japanese literati in the Muromachi period (1336–1573). The neat and refined landscapes also reflect Chinese aesthetics. They reference the style of Ma Yuan, a court painter living in the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279).
