Description
The Kawamura Kaneto Ainu Memorial Hall was founded by the Ainu community in 1916 and is Japan’s oldest Ainu museum. It is a perfect place to get a feel for how the indigenous people here once lived. Visitors can view a precious photographic record of Ainu life, as well as try their hand at Ainu embroidery and musical instruments. Many of the exhibits at the Asahikawa City Museum are based on recent research that shows how the Ainu were a trading people. Visual exhibits powerfully recreate scenes such as the work of blacksmiths, fishing on the Ishikari River, and traditional Ainu dwellings.
