講談以外に花柳界の話なども収録。明治44年（1911）創刊の『講談倶楽部』（講談社）に競合する形で創刊。近藤紫雲や片山春帆らが表紙や口絵を担当した。本誌は口絵にこだわる姿勢を見せ、『講談倶楽部』を超えようとした。
