小説に加え、明治末期から講談や落語の速記を掲載。石版口絵が主流の中、20年間木版口絵の収録を続けていた。当時の人気画家だった武内桂舟と水野年方が多く口絵を描き、その次世代の画家として鏑木清方も精力的に口絵を描いていた。
