表紙を描いた蕉堂は三島蕉窓の弟子であること以外、ほとんど来歴が判明しない。師・蕉窓は『前賢故実』の作者である菊池容斎の門下だった。本図では夜桜が散る中、精悍な顔つきでたたずむ大石内蔵之助を描く。
