Description
家康の経験した負け戦とは三十一歳に当たる元亀三年（一五七二）十二月、三方ヶ原で起こった武田信玄との合戦である。家康は後年、この敗戦を肝に銘ずるためにその姿を描かせ、慢心の自戒として生涯座右を離さなかったと伝えられる。威厳のある堂々とした権現像とは異なり、憔悴し切った家康の表情が巧みに描かれており、別名「顰（しかみ）像」とも呼ばれている。
