Kanrin-maru

The first Japanese warship to cross the Pacific Ocean toward the end of the Edo period; Kaishu Katsu and Yukichi Fukuzawa traveled to the United States on this ship

Kanrin-maru was an Edo period warship ordered by the Shogunate from the Netherlands to establish a navy. Work began on it in 1856 at the shipyards of Fop Smit in the Netherlands, and it was christened in 1857. The ship arrived in Nagasaki in August of that year, captained by Willem Johan Cornelis Huyssen van Kattendijke. The original name of Kanrin-maru was Japan.  This wooden three-masted ship was 49.5 meters in length and 7.2 meters wide and had a displacement of 625 tons. It had a 100-horsepower engine and an auxiliary steam system, could travel at a speed of up to six knots, and had 12 guns. Kanrin-maru became the practice ship for the Nagasaki Naval Academy. In 1860 it went on a mission to the United States, accompanied by the U.S. Navy ship Powhatan, for practical training. A total of 98 Japanese and 11 Americans traveled on the ship, including Captain Kaishu Katsu, Admiral Yoshitake Kimura, his attendant Yukichi Fukuzawa, and the American officer John Mercer Brooke. This was the first Japanese warship to cross the Pacific Ocean, a journey that took 37 days. After the Shogunate collapsed, Kanrin-maru became part of Takeaki Enomoto’s fleet of ships, and it was captured by Imperial forces when stormy weather forced Kanrin-maru to take refuge in Shimizu harbor. The ship was then used by the new Imperial government to develop Hokkaido, where it was decommissioned in 1872.

  • 『環海航路日記』は、日米修好通商条約のための遣米使節団に医師として随行した広瀬保庵（1808－1865）の日記。保庵は咸臨丸とともに渡海したポーハタン (Pawhatan) 号に乗船し、使節団の動向を記している。掲載の図は、万延元年（1860）3月に南米パナマを通過した際に乗った蒸気機関車の図。

  • 海上自衛隊佐世保史料館。長崎県佐世保市にある日本海軍の遺産を継承する施設で、咸臨丸の1/100スケールの模型が展示されています。「セイルタワー」は、屋上部の構造物が船の帆（セイル）に見えることからつけられた愛称。
