Jinbaori (Sleeveless Overcoat)
Jinbaori is the upper garment worn by samurai over their armor. During the Azuchi-Momoyama era, innovative and original designs flourished.
The upper garments worn by samurai over their armor were called jinbaori. These garments were also known as gusoku-baori and jindo-fuku. From the mid-Muromachi era, jinbaori were used as protective clothing to keep out the cold and prevent becoming wet in the rain. As jinbaori were used by the military, they needed to show dignity as well as be practical. There was no single standard of design. Many jinbaori did not have sleeves, although there were also designs with wide sleeves.
During the Azuchi-Momoyama era, the number of innovative and original designs increased under the influence of the Nanban (European) culture. There were a variety of designs, including some representing the wearer’s religion. Jinbaori were made of imported velvet or a thick woolen cloth, and the back was interlaced with red, white and yellow designs or custom patterns. These patterns included flags, family crests, and even symbols of the samurai’s religion. Jinbaori were also made to be functional. Leather was sewn to the bottom of the garment, increasing its durability, and slits were added for ease of movement.
