Seiki Kuroda

1866-1924

Seiki Kurodahis was a Japanese western-style artist born in Kagoshima city, Kagoshima Prefecture as a child of a feudal retainer of Satsuma. He was soon adopted by his uncle, Kiyotsuna Kuroda, and came to Tokyo when he was young. He studied law abroad in France, but 3 years later turned to painting – he studied art under Louis-Joseph-Raphaël Collin. His works Dokusho (Woman Reading) and Chosho (Morning Toilette) were awarded exhibition prizes in Paris. The technique used in these paintings to represent bright light coming in through a window later led to a term for a group of painters called gaiko-ha (Plein-airism).

In 1895, he exhibited his painting Chosho (Morning Toilette) at the National Industrial Exhibition in 1895. The nude motif of the painting was highly controversial at the time.

In 1896, he launched the Western-style painting group, Hakubakai. In the same year, he was invited to become an instructor at the Tokyo Fine Arts School, contributing to the western art development in Japan during the Meiji era. Later in life, he devoted himself into the art administration and worked as a member of the House of Peers and the president of the Imperial Art Academy (present The Japan Art Academy).
