Baseball

Baseball is a ball game that was introduced in 1872. This sport is popular among students, and became a national sport equal to the United States.

Baseball was first introduced into Japan in 1872. The game, which became popular among students, quickly spread throughout the country and grew to become the national sport of Japan. As a baseball powerhouse, Japan takes center stage alongside America. While rarely the case in other countries, in Japan, baseball teams comprising of all generations, from elementary school to high school or university to full-time employees and professional baseball players, can compete at a national level. Japan’s rise in international baseball started when legendary pitcher Eiji Sawamura shut down major-league players, such as George Herman 'Babe' Ruth, Jr, during a Japan vs. America match in 1934. Since then, many baseball legends have made their marks in history, including Tetsuharu Kawakami, Shigeo Nagashima, Sadaharu Oh, Hideo Nomo, Ichiro Suzuki, Hideki Matsui and Shohei Ohtani.
